When Do We Understand?

E-mail Print PDF

[Unable to display photo]

When I went on vacation two weeks ago, I took with me several books that I had on my shelves that I intended to read, one of which is A Kierkegaard Anthology edited by Robert Bretall. A quote from Kierkegaard's "Concluding Unscientific Postscript" got me thinking about the nature of understanding and its political implications. Kierkegaard wrote:

Are We Still Killing the Prophets?

I just finished reading Linchpin by Seth Godin and I must say that there is a lot in this book that I found disagreeable, which I won't go into right now. However, the author does make a good argument for the need today for innovative, tradition-breaking individuals in the workforce. The environment today is changing so rapidly, that companies simply cannot afford to do business as usual.

How do You Feel about the Word "Church"?

E-mail Print PDF

I can see how some of my posts might be perceived as communicating disdain for the church. I do get discouraged sometimes, but it's not with the church as such, but with the way Christians often hinder her full potential by an inane adherence to past structures and programs that no longer communicate the beauty and power of the message of Jesus Messiah. The situation is so critical that I am tempted at times to throw away the very word "church" and replace it with some more descriptive word, but, in the end, that word too would eventually become encrusted with ecclesiastical barnacles of the past. It was with great satisfaction, therefore, that I read the following paragraph from N. T. Wright's book "Simply Christian." If you love God's church, read on and be refreshed.

What is the Significacne of Ordination?

E-mail Print PDF

A study of what the Bible says about "ordination" reveals that it was a concept reserved almost exclusively to the Old Testament (maybe even totally to the OT depending on how you interpret keys proof-texts in the NT). One thing seems clear, the concept of a separate class of "professional" Christians seems limited to the Old Covenant priesthood and that this was replaced in the New Testament by the Priesthood of all Believers.

Ordination II: To Control or not to Control

This is the second of a series of posts related to ordination. This questions has to do with the way Christian Churches handle ordination of ministers? The question was directed primarily toward the particular brotherhood of churches often referred to as the Independent Christian Churches. However, the issue is one that all those who wish to serve God should consider.
